Travel Back Thousands of Years
Until human colonisation, the only land mammals found on the islands of New Zealand were three species of bat (one of which, the Pekapeka - Chalinolobus tuberculatus, the New Zealand Long Tailed Bat can be found at Stravon today). Birds occupied or dominated all major niches in the New Zealand animal ecology. Human settlers preyed heavily on our birds eventually hunting them to extinction.
